What is the difference between checked and hand baggage?

Checked baggage is transported in the hold; it must be checked in at the airport and collected on arrival at your destination from baggage reclaim.

Hand baggage is usually carried in the cabin by the passenger and must be stowed in the overhead lockers or underneath the seat in front of the passenger. Please remember that there is limited storage space in the cabin. If there is no more room in the cabin, we may ask you to hand over your carry-on bag, even if it is within the dimensions for hand baggage.
With Brussels Airlines, you can check in your hand baggage for free (for flights within Europe). In this event, the baggage will be transported in the hold and you'll collect it on arrival at your destination from baggage reclaim.
